During the Civil War, the Grand Hotel and the Gunnison House served as a hospital for wounded Confederate soldiers from the Battle of Vicksburg. Confederate Rest Cemetery honors more than 300 Confederate soldiers who died there while in the hospital. The original seven-acre tract included markers for the Unknown Confederate Dead, but after a fire in 1869 destroyed the soldiers' records kept in the hotel, the identities of those buried in Confederate Rest were lost.
