Fallsville Wildlife Area takes its name from Fallsville, Ohio, a short-lived small town in Highland County. The Clouser family of North Carolina settled Fallsville in the mid-1820s and built a grist mill at the falls along Clear Creek, and John Timberlake platted the town in 1848. In the early 1870s, the growing town was expected to have a bright future, but it failed to attract a railroad and its expansion stopped. Some of the original building foundations remain, and the location became known for paranormal activity associated with its history. The Ohio Division of Wildlife began acquiring the Fallsville Wildlife Area in 1957 and continued through 2008. Seven miles north of Hillsboro, the area includes 1,785 acres of grassland, rolling hills, pine stands, and hardwoods, and is used mainly for public hunting, fishing, wildlife viewing, hiking, habitat management, and wildlife research, with an archery range, a dog training area, and a popular two-tiered waterfall.
