A statue of John Henry was erected here by the Hilldale-Talcott Ruritan Club in 1972 on the one hundredth anniversary of his legendary steel-driving feat. The club cared for the statue until 2012, when the John Henry Historical Park Steering Committee refurbished and relocated it directly below this site at the face of the Great Bend Tunnel, which he helped construct. Before its relocation, thousands of people visited this spot to pay homage, and John Henry now stands in the park below in peace and dignity.
