John Henry died from a race with the steam drill during construction of the Big Bend Tunnel for the C. & O. Railway Co. in 1872. One hundred years later, in 1972, the Hilldale - Talcott Ruritan Club erected a statue in his honor to mark that page of history, expressing respect for the great and the strong and the value of being of service to others.
