Sugarloaf Mountain, or Mount Sugarloaf, is a distinctive butte-like mountain in South Deerfield, Massachusetts, at the southern end of the Pocumtuck Range. Its two summits rise above the Connecticut River valley on dramatic arkose sandstone cliffs, making it one of the area’s most prominent landmarks. The mountain preserves layered meanings: Native American tradition identified it as the stone body of a giant beaver, while its rocks record the ancient rifting that split North America from Africa and Eurasia about 200 million years ago. Now largely protected within Mount Sugarloaf State Reservation, it remains a popular destination for hiking, driving, and valley views.
