Engineer Mountain is a 13,225-foot summit in southwestern Colorado's San Juan Mountains, on the boundary of Hinsdale and Ouray counties near Ouray and Engineer Pass. Named for the United States Army Corps of Engineers after their 1873 survey of the region, it later received official recognition from the United States Board on Geographic Names. Though described as having modest relief, it rises steeply above nearby valleys and drains west toward the Uncompahgre River and east into the Gunnison River system. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, it is known for striking summit views and an alpine subarctic climate marked by snowy winters, cool summers, and late-summer monsoon storms.
