Gravel Mountain
Nature
Gravel Mountain is a 13,596-foot peak in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado, in Hinsdale County near Ouray. Rising about 2,800 feet above Henson Creek in just a mile, it stands out for its steep, abrupt relief above the surrounding basin. Its runoff feeds Henson Creek in the Gunnison River watershed, and access comes by way of the Alpine Loop Back Country Byway. The mountain has an alpine subarctic climate with long snowy winters, short cool summers, and year-round precipitation. Officially recognized by the United States Board on Geographic Names and recorded in print since at least 1906, it is one of Colorado’s notable thirteeners.
