Buchanan County was formed in 1858 from Tazewell and Russell and was named for James Buchanan, President of the United States from 1857 to 1861. Dickenson County was formed in 1880 from Russell, Wise, and Buchanan and was named for W. J. Dickenson, a prominent public man.
