Established at Columbus on February 17, 1842, the post office moved across the Suwannee in 1867 to serve a sawmill complex and became Ellaville in 1872. Its postmasters included George F. Drew from 1867 to 1883, Robert L. Millinor from 1893 to 1912, Frederick Stroud from 1914 to 1922, and Mrs. Pearl E. Noegel, the last, from 1929 to 1942. Cited by Ripley as the Smallest Post Office in the World and associated with the colorful romance of the Suwannee Valley, the building was presented to The Madison Garden Club by Mr. and Mrs. Van H. Priest.
