Madison Blue Spring State Park centers on Madison Blue Spring, one of Florida’s thirty-three first-magnitude springs, where at least two thousand eight hundred liters of water per second emerge into the Withlacoochee River. Acquired as a state park after thirty-eight acres were sold in two thousand, the spring had long served local residents as a freshwater source. Its clear, cool seventy-two-degree water, deep basin, and short spring run visibly sweep back the river current. The site also features classic karst terrain and an extensive underwater cave system explored for more than seven thousand nine hundred meters. Wildlife includes fish, turtles, and specialized cave crustaceans, while the spring has also figured in disputes over commercial water bottling.
