Union Grove Baptist Church was organized in the Sawyer community about 1865 and had 27 members that year. In 1870 Dougald McAlpine donated this 3-acre site. The church building was erected in 1880, and the Union Baptist Association held its annual convention here. This congregation, in 1882, helped form the Evergreen Baptist Association, the Grimes County Association in 1896, and the Creath Association in 1901. It hosted the Evergreen Association in 1892 and the Creath Associations in 1901 and 1910. Peak membership in 1918 was 134. The structure was rebuilt in 1952. After a 1965-70 lapse, regular services were resumed in 1971.
