Eighty Eight Steps to Knowledge

In 1911 the Erin Elementary/High School was constructed on the hill above, and these steps were built to provide safe access to the school. Before buses were mechanically able to travel up and down the winding gravel road, all students and teachers walked the steps daily. They remained in use until 1958, when a new high school was constructed on West Main Street.
