Before the California gold rush in 1849, this was the most notable gold-mining region in the country. The Morrow Mine here, opened before 1835, was one of the earliest gold mines in which underground mining was employed. It was profitably worked for a number of years before it finally closed. Many other unworked mines are nearby.
