Louis D. Bonanni was recognized in Surf City for longstanding service to the community, including spearheading a fundraising drive that generated over $36,000 for the construction of Veterans' Memorial Park, organizing volunteers to complete the park's landscaping and maintain it as a lasting tribute to all veterans, and contributing for many years to borough beautification and other community projects as president of the Taxpayers Association. He and his wife, Nell, built their family home in Surf City in 1951. During World War II, as a captain with the 14th Battalion 15th Marines, 6th Division, he led a combat unit against Japanese forces during the invasions of Okinawa and Guam and into China.
