The Delaware and Lehigh National and State Heritage Corridor brings together the people, places, and events that helped shape the nation across five Pennsylvania counties. Canals and railroads, remnants of Northeastern Pennsylvania’s prosperous coal age, form the spine of this more than 150-mile corridor. Its history trail features the stories of lumberjacks, coal miners, lock tenders, canalers, and railroaders, while its canal paths, bike trails, and the waters of the Delaware and Lehigh Rivers offer outdoor recreation. In the north, Luzerne County contains coal towns, vibrant cities, ethnic diversity, and arts and educational institutions. Carbon County offers scenery and traces of the coal and lumber industries, along with towns, a coal museum, and an underground mine. The Lehigh Valley includes rolling hills, winding rivers, farms, covered bridges, Victorian townhouses, Moravian heritage in the valley’s oldest city, and the history of the steel and cement industries, as well as noted festivals. Farther south, Bucks County along the Delaware River Scenic Drive features pastoral vistas, landmarks from America’s struggle for independence, an artist’s community, and Colonial farmsteads, together forming a distinctive American landscape.
