Gnaden Huetten was the first settlement in Carbon County, founded in 1746. On that fatal day in 1755, the settlement was attacked by hostile Indians. Ten people lost their lives, five of whom died in the flames of their home. Their remains are buried in Lehighton Cemetery on the hill to the north.
