La Angostura

13
Near here the Rio Grande Valley closes into a narrow pass, or angostura, and control of this pass was critical to the safety of trade along the Camino Real. Because of that importance, this area was the focus of fortifications from the early 17th century onward. The 18th century settlement of Algodones developed from continuing Spanish efforts to control the pass and the nearby fords of the Rio Grande.
