Devil's Hopyard State Park in East Haddam, Connecticut, is a 1,000-acre recreation area centered on Chapman Falls and the Eightmile River, known for its gorge, forest, ledges, and striking stepped waterfall. Its name reaches to before 1800, when George Griffin grew hops near Malt House Brook, though the source of “Devil’s” remains uncertain and tied to both local names and legends about the rock formations. The falls once powered Beebe’s Mills, and in 1775 the site saw a Sons of Liberty attack on a loyalist-owned mill. Protected by Connecticut in 1919, the park also preserves historic bridges and notable viewpoints.
