Dedicated on October 28, 2000, Cancer Survivors Park was created as a tribute to everyone touched by cancer. Its hand-painted tiles were made by cancer survivors from Northeastern Pennsylvania, and its engraved brick pavers were sponsored by local residents in honor or memory of loved ones. Conceived as a dynamic community project, it was intended to grow over time through the addition of new tiles and pavers and to honor the Family of Survivors through a broad community partnership. Rededicated on May 22, 2010, the park was revitalized through a partnership between the Northeast Regional Cancer Institute, Leadership Lackawanna, and Lackawanna County after Northeastern Pennsylvania's climate made the original design unsustainable. To preserve it as a fitting tribute to those touched by cancer, the Leadership Lackawanna Class of 2009 volunteered to refurbish the park, adding new benches and landscape work so it could serve as a permanent contemplative space where the community could draw inspiration from the courage of cancer survivors.
