Long Beach Light stands on San Pedro’s middle breakwater in Long Beach Harbor, marking the entrance channel for one of California’s busiest ports. Established in 1949, it became known as the “robot light” because it was fully automated and remotely controlled from Los Angeles Harbor Light, making it an early example of a new postwar lighthouse design on the West Coast. Its stark modern form—a 42-foot white rectangular concrete tower supported on six columns—departed sharply from traditional lighthouse architecture. Equipped with an airway-type beacon, fog signals, a radio beacon, and Coast Guard radar, it remains a distinctive symbol of automated harbor navigation.
