RMS Queen Mary, built for Cunard at Clydebank in Scotland, entered service in 1936 as one of the great Atlantic liners of her age, combining speed, scale, and elegant Art Deco interiors. She won and regained the Blue Riband for the fastest Atlantic crossing and, with Queen Elizabeth, became a mainstay of transatlantic travel. During the Second World War she was converted into the troopship "Grey Ghost," carrying enormous numbers of soldiers and setting a record in 1943 for the most people transported on a single vessel. Retired in 1967, she is permanently moored in Long Beach, California, where she survives as a hotel, museum, and historic landmark.
