Frankfort Light marks the harbor at Frankfort, Michigan, where improvements began after the harbor was first dredged in 1859 and piers were completed in 1873. An earlier timber-framed pyramid beacon was built that year on the north pier, first lit on October 15, 1873, and later equipped with a fog signal. The present lighthouse, built in 1912 as a square steel pyramidal tower with a cast-iron lantern room, was electrified in 1919. After new concrete breakwaters made the older piers obsolete, the lighthouse was moved in 1932 to its current position on the north breakwater. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.
