Suntop Homes in Ardmore, Pennsylvania, was Frank Lloyd Wright’s attempt to create a repeatable suburban house type that increased density without sacrificing privacy, gardens, or the identity of an individual home. Developed from his Broadacre City ideas and commissioned in 1938, the plan joined four vertically stacked single-family dwellings in a pinwheel arrangement separated by thick brick walls and organized around compact shared utilities. Wright envisioned four such buildings, but only one was completed in 1939. Rising costs, World War II, and local opposition halted the broader experiment. Despite later fire damage and alterations, Suntop remains a rare built example of Wright’s larger-scale housing ideas.
