This walnut tree grew from a seed of a walnut tree at George Washington's home at Mount Vernon. It was planted on February 22, 1932 by the American Legion Auxiliary and Boy Scouts of Hammond in celebration of Washington's bicentennial, and was transplanted to this location on February 22, 1938 by the Hammond Garden Club.
