Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area is a 401-acre park in Los Angeles’s Baldwin Hills, valued as one of the region’s largest urban open spaces for its trails, lawns, picnic areas, and sweeping views. Its landscape reflects deep change: the hills were part of the Tongva homeland for more than 8,000 years, later became ranch land in the Spanish and Mexican eras, and then held the Baldwin Hills Reservoir until the 1963 dam disaster flooded neighborhoods below and killed five residents. Acquired afterward for public use, the area opened as parkland in 1983 and was renamed in 1988. Today it combines recreation, wildlife habitat, and links to the city’s Olympic and trail networks.
