On this site in 1915, Thomas H. Ince founded the first motion picture studio in Culver City. In 1919, Samuel Goldwyn succeeded to the title to this and adjoining property for his production company. In 1924, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer acquired ownership. The studio stands on 175 acres of ground that was once part of the vast La Ballona Rancho, whose settlement began in California's Spanish period. The Studio Colonnade Entrance at 10202 Washington Boulevard was constructed in 1915-16, and in 1990 the property was designated a Landmark Cultural Resource by the City of Culver City.
