Baldwin Hills Village, completed between 1935 and 1942 during the Roosevelt administration by Reginald Johnson with Lewis Wilson, Edwin Merrill, and Robert Alexander, was planned with contributions from consulting architect Clarence Stein and reflects an innovative, humanistic approach to community housing for the automobile age. This well-designed urban residential complex, in harmony with nature and expressing serene civilized living, has been designated a National Historic Landmark and was also declared Historic Cultural Monument No. 174 by the City of Los Angeles.
