Built circa 1737, the center section became an inn during the stagecoach era and was enlarged in the early 19th century for summer boarders. Around 1737, the Stage House and Liberty Pole was kept by Col. Recompense Stanberry during the Revolution, when he raised a troop of Jersey Blues at the liberty pole standing in front of the inn, and for many years the inn was a stop on the Swift Sure Stage Line.
