Warwick flourished for some 50 years and was succeeded by Oregon, and both were early shipping ports. During Warwick's era, flatboats ran regularly between here and New Orleans, and later steamboats did so at Oregon. This point was at the head of slackwater navigation on the Kentucky River. The creek is still called Landing Run because of its significance to James Harrod. On the Kentucky River, 2 1/2 miles from here, James Harrod and his party landed in 1774 before founding Harrodsburg. Called Harrod's Landing, this location was a major rendezvous for militia in 1780. It became the site of Warwick, founded in 1787, whose trustees included early surveyor Samuel McAfee, future governor Christopher Greenup, and the noted Indian fighter Hugh McGary.
