Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes National Wildlife Refuge protects 2,553 acres of California’s Central Coast within one of the state’s largest remaining coastal dune systems. Spanning southern San Luis Obispo County and northern Santa Barbara County between the Pacific Ocean and farmland, it was established to protect breeding habitat for the endangered California least tern and the threatened western snowy plover. Its dunes and coastal sage scrub also support many other sensitive animals and sixteen rare or endangered plant species. As part of a broader partnership across the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes, it helps coordinate endangered species protection and removal of invasive plants and animals in this fragile coastal landscape.
