Captain J.F. Lyttle, Jr. graduated from Mullens High School in 1958 and served with distinction in Vietnam in the U.S. Army as a company commander with c1/5 1st Cavalry Division. He received three Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star, and the Silver Star, and after being shot down in a helicopter and paralyzed from the waist down, he retired from the Army as a captain. He later worked at the Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center in Waynesboro, Va., as Rehabilitation and Recreation Director, participated in the Wheelchair Olympics, coached the Va. Wheelchair Olympic Team, transferred to the Franklin D. Roosevelt Institute for Rehabilitation as Facilities Director, became an official for the National Wheelchair Olympics, carried the Olympic Torch into Warm Springs in 1996, and died on December 3, 2004. He was regarded as a true hero of Mullens.
