Sevier County's first county jail was built in 1879 at Third North and Main Street, adjoining the county court house on the east. It had two plastered cells made by spiking 2 x 4's and nailing them together, a shingled roof that was supposed to be rainproof, and a high board fence around the lot. Bed ticks were filled with straw, and a board served as a bed.
