The Wright-Vaughan House was built about 1870 by William C. Wright, Mt. Vernon's first physician, a North Carolinian born in 1820 who married Mary Rutherford in Tennessee and moved here in 1850. When he built this house, he turned the earlier home into a hospital, and it was used that way until 1945. In 1889, Dr. and Mrs. Wright gave the house to their youngest daughter, Jennie Vaughan, and her daughter Jessie lived here until 1971. The house was bought in 1972 and restored by Ruth Elliott Monden, and it became a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1974.
