Bartonsville Covered Bridge in Rockingham, Vermont, carries Lower Bartonsville Road over the Williams River and reflects a long history of covered bridges at this crossing. An earlier bridge was built here in 1870 by Sanford Granger after the great flood of 1869 changed the river’s course, replacing an even older bridge upstream. That nineteenth-century bridge became an important part of the village’s historic character, surviving accidents and repairs, including major renovation in the early 1980s, until Hurricane Irene destroyed it in 2011. Using insurance funds, town officials built the present 151-foot lattice-truss covered bridge in 2012, and it opened in 2013.
