Paulina Lake Guard Station stands near Paulina Lake in central Oregon’s Newberry caldera as a surviving example of an early Forest Service residence in a remote fire patrol area. Built in 1938 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, it housed a seasonal assistant ranger during summer wildfire season, when limited roads made travel from larger stations impractical. Designed in the Forest Service’s Pacific Northwest rustic style, it features wood-frame construction, a gabled roof, stone chimney, recessed porch, and built-in garage. John P. Robins and his family spent seventeen summers there from 1942 to 1959. Later preserved, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 and now serves as the Paulina Visitor Center.
