Tombstone Courthouse State Historic Park preserves the original Cochise County courthouse, built in 1882 after Tombstone’s rapid growth following the silver boom sparked by Ed Schieffelin’s 1877 discovery. When Cochise County was created in 1881, Tombstone became county seat, and this large red-brick courthouse gathered county offices, courtrooms, and jail under one roof as a symbol of law and order in a turbulent mining town associated with the Earp–Clanton feud. Tombstone remained county seat until 1929. After county offices left, the building was restored as a museum, became one of Arizona’s earliest state parks, and remains the oldest courthouse still standing in Arizona.
