In 1683, Don Antonio de Otermín and Father Fray Francisco Ayeta, O.F.M., established the mission and pueblo of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción del Pueblo de Socorro. Franciscan missionaries maintained it for the civilizing and Christianizing of the Piro, Thano, and Gemex Indians, who were refugees after the Pueblo revolt in New Mexico.
