Hunting Island Lighthouse

1
Hunting Island Lighthouse, near Beaufort, South Carolina, began in 1859, but its original tower was destroyed in 1862 during the Civil War. The present lighthouse, built from 1873 to 1875, is a rare segmented cast-iron design associated with Major George H. Elliot and was engineered to be dismantled and moved. That feature became essential when erosion threatened its first site, prompting relocation inland in 1889. Once visible for 17 miles, the light served mariners until decommissioning in 1933. It later sheltered storm survivors, gained National Register status in 1977, and remains a notable engineering landmark preserved against coastal corrosion.
