Sandbars off the coast of Hunting Island could destroy ships and endanger everyone onboard, so lightkeepers and their families lived here to ensure the lighthouse warned sailors of those hidden dangers. The site includes outbuildings and the remains of the lightkeeper's home, and the lighthouse was climbed each day by its keepers. Recognized for its importance in the nation's story, the site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
