Hunting Island’s lighthouse has stood since 1875 as the second lighthouse on the island after the first was destroyed during the Civil War, and it occupies its second location. Originally built on the northern end of the island, it was engineered to be moveable because of concerns about severe erosion. Within fourteen years, the ocean threatened the original site, so the lighthouse was disassembled and relocated here. From 140 feet above sea level, its light was visible seventeen miles out to sea. After being moved to this site in 1889, the lighthouse was deactivated in 1933.
