One mile east on the Saluda River stood a four-story granite building erected by the Saluda Manufacturing Company, incorporated in 1834. Operated by slave labor, it was at one time the largest cotton factory in the state. Burned by Sherman on Feb. 17, 1865, it was rebuilt and operated for some time after the war.
