Founded as Bethel Seminary at McLemoresville in 1842 by the West Tennessee Synod of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Ruben Burrow as principal, the institution was incorporated in 1847, became Bethel College in 1850, moved here in 1872, and was presented to the General Assembly of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in 1919.
