The Tennessee Baptist Orphans' Home was organized after a committee assembled by Mrs. Georgia Eastman met on May 5, 1891, and it became a reality on Oct. 13, 1891, when bylaws were adopted, application was made for incorporation, and the former Delaware Hotel in Nashville was rented. The Rev. T.T. Thompson was the first staff member, and four children entered the next month. The home became part of the Tennessee Baptist Convention in 1894. As more space was needed, ground was broken near here on April 15, 1911, for a new building on what was then a 75-acre site. In 1953 the home's name was changed to Tennessee Baptist Children's Home, and between 1971 and 1974 group homes replaced dormitories. The campus also includes the family cemetery of Revolutionary War soldier David Johnston, who came to Williamson County from Mecklenburg, N. C., by 1807. Those known to be buried there are David Johnston, Elizabeth Johnston, Robert Johnston, Rachel Johnston, David Johnston, Jr., Carrie Johnston, Esau Johnston, Henry C. Johnston, Fannie C. Johnston, Rachael Johnston, William W. Ford, James Polk Reed, and Dallas Reed, and the cemetery also contains many unknown graves.
