Under the leadership of Rev. Stephen Bachiler of Southampton, England, a small band of pioneers seeking a larger liberty settled in the wilderness near this spot in October 1638 to plant a free church in a free town. They were joined in 1639 by others, and in that year the town of Hampton was incorporated. The founders and fathers of Hampton were honored for the ideals for which they strove and held up as an inspiration to posterity.
