During the early twentieth century, a carved stone drinking fountain and horse watering trough provided gravity-fed spring water when horses and oxen pulled heavy loads, people walked dusty roads to tend their affairs, and students hiked to and from school. Donated by Catlin family descendants to honor their ancestors and benefit their fellow man, they originally stood at the top of Meeting House Hill near Catlin Corners, where Harmony Hill and Locust Roads intersect Burlington Road. As motor vehicle traffic increased over the decades, changes to improve highway sight lines in the immediate area required that the spring-fed monuments be moved to their present location for safekeeping and viewing.
