Topsmead State Forest in Litchfield, Connecticut, grew from a hilltop property bought in 1916 by Henry Sabin Chase into Edith Morton Chase’s summer estate and working farm. Edith Chase expanded the land to more than 500 acres and developed a substantial Tudor Revival house that retained the character of an earlier cottage, along with informal grounds reflecting her preferences. The estate combines open fields, woodland, and hilltop landscapes, while the house preserves much of its original 1920s interior character. After Edith Chase’s death in 1972, the property passed to the State Forest Commission of Connecticut with an endowment for its care and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.
