The Schroeder Brick & Lime Manufacturing Company was one of the earliest industries along the Minnesota River, dating from 1876. Bricks used to build the town of Shakopee were made from red clay dug from the river bottoms. The brickyard operated until 1941, and limestone was broken up and burned in a kiln to produce lime used in mortar and plaster.
