Clyde McKay irrevocably shaped the destiny of Bend by persuading Eastern lumber interests to expand operations there and join him in forming The Bend Company. That company purchased Drake's holdings and spearheaded economic development in the area. McKay was also a driving force behind enhancing recreational opportunities there, helping stock East Lake with Rainbow Trout, helping create the first fish hatchery in the Bend area, and introducing pheasants to Central Oregon.
