Tahquitz Peak is an 8,846-foot granite summit in the San Jacinto Mountains above Idyllwild, known both as a popular hiking destination and as one of Southern California’s historic climbing centers. Its name comes from Tahquitz, a luminous spirit recognized by several Southern California tribes, especially Cahuilla and many Kumeyaay communities, and it first appeared in print on a 1901 USGS map. The peak became a major force in American climbing history from the 1930s onward, with early route development, pioneering difficult ascents, and the creation of the Yosemite Decimal System in the 1950s. It also remains an active fire lookout and a mountain shaped by events such as the 2018 Cranston Fire.
