Suicide Rock, formerly called Suicide Peak, is a granite outcrop above Idyllwild in Southern California near Tahquitz Peak, rising to about 7,510 feet. It is widely known as a rock-climbing destination, with more than 300 described routes on its granite faces. Its striking name is linked to a local legend about a Native American princess and her lover, ordered to part, who instead leapt from the rock together. That tale has also drawn skepticism, with suggestions that it grew out of Helen Hunt Jackson’s Ramona and was promoted in the late 19th century to attract tourism to the area.
